ACT NOW: Oppose Proposed Fee To Access Maryland Land Records

MSBA continues to lead a campaign on behalf of the profession and preserving access to justice by opposing a $0.20 per page charge to access Maryland land records online, beginning in May 2025. MSBA is actively engaging with elected officials, state agencies, and other affected groups about our members' concerns regarding the significant financial impact to individuals and businesses and the lack of transparency in the decision-making process.

MSBA urged legislators to oppose the proposed fee during the 2025 Legislative Session, but the $0.20 charge was already included as part of the budget. The State Archives has confirmed that the online fee to access land records will not begin on May 1, 2025, allowing MSBA and other affected groups to provide feedback on the fee structure, posted on the Archives' website here.

As we continue our immediate advocacy against these unreasonable fees, we need to highlight the significant costs to various practice areas and ultimately, to clients of legal services. We ask that you take action here and contact State Archives directly. After you input your personal information to the right, click  under "Email Body" and add any personal messaging below the stars (*******), sharing the specific financial impact on your work and ability to serve clients under the proposed fees.
