Maine lawmakers are considering removing rate increase protections through proposed "language UU," including eliminating a requirement for COLAs to be implemented in a timely manner on an annual basis and cutting the two-year rebasing schedule for nursing homes. These cuts would devastate facilities already struggling with rising costs, workforce shortages, and record closures.
At the same time, the current state budget proposal includes no cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) for long term care providers. Without annual COLAs, facilities are forced to provide the same level of care with less purchasing power each year. Meanwhile, long term care workers—who are already paid less than their counterparts in other sectors—fall further behind.
