Effectively immediately, the White House is withholding Congressionally appropriated 21st Century Community Learning Center funds meant to be disbursed for the 2025 to 2026 school year. State education agencies have no 21st CCLC to disburse for the fiscal year which starts today.
Federal law prohibits the executive branch from withholding congressionally appropriated funds unless it gives federal lawmakers an opportunity to approve or reject the move within 45 days. We anticipate the federal government withholding funds will affect current 21st CCLC contracts and any future competitions.
This withholding of funds is devastating for the children and families the most in need. Programs rely on this funding for summer programs as well, meaning this will have an immediate impact and only worsen as the school year starts. 55,000 children will lose afterschool programs and be put at risk. Tens of thousands of parents will lose essential child care and be unable to work.
Send ACT Now's Action Alert to your legislators today to emphasize the disastrous impact of withholding 21st CCLC funding and ask them release it to states immediately to prevent summer program closures and ensure school-year programs can launch in August! You can also customize the email to share why afterschool programs are
essential to you and your community.
